Jamini Roy

Namasta! My name is Jamini Roy. I am one of the greatest Indian painters of the 20th century. Most of you may know me from the portrait "Santhal Mother and Child". My work was popular in the Bengali middle class and European community. I was born in 1887,in the district of Bankura. I feel I got most of my passion from my father,Ramataran Roy. He was a middle class man who resigned from government service to pursue his interest in art. When I was 16 I enrolled myself in the "Government School of Art".
In 1908 I recieved my Diaploma in fine art.It may be a shock to you but my career didn't take off fast. Others felt my work was bland and dull. Later I soon took intrest in the field of Kalighat paintings. I rebelled against the earlier impressionist landscapes and portraits .
My goal was to show the simpicity in the life of the folk people. I felt I needed to someone give Indian its one identity. I step at my own beat, to portray what I love! Phir Milenge!
